A walk in Citronneraie Mazet in Menton

Discover our private visit of the Mazet Citronneraie in Menton, with the elegant François Mazet. A magical place for a golden fruit, the lemon. With the amazing Jean Cocteau Museum, here is another reason to visit Menton!
By Emma Sebbag

A legend recounts that Eve, after being chased out of Paradise, took with her a golden fruit… After crossing many lands, she stopped facing Garavan Bay that, with its luxurious vegetation and its mild climate, recalled the Garden of Eden. There she planted the lemon that she had brought with her, and there sprung the little paradise of Menton and its beautiful crops of an exceptional lemon, unmistakable by virtue of its flavor and sweetness.

This garden with its marvelous golden fruits can still be visited today, by appointment, at the Citronneraie Mazet. Built around an old residence dating back to the 16th century and continually improved and enhanced with new species, the garden is made up of course of lemon trees, but also grapefruit, orange and mandarin trees, and much more, the limit being the limitless imagination of François Mazet, former racing car champion and passionate property owner, who fell under the spell of the Menton region. So to the citrus fruits are added this terraced area including pergolas and benches within an architecture that is conducive to strolling and reflection, more than 800 species of perfectly adapted tropical and subtropical plants, as well as an olive grove including a few centuries old specimens.

The lemons cultivated and sold on site are of course completely organic and contain all the qualities so particular to Menton country. Indeed, the Menton lemon which is remarkable for its oval shape and its very bright yellow, possesses above all a distinctive flavor: it’s a true fruit that you can bite into without fearing the awful sourness of its cousins from Spain, or elsewhere. The natural sweet flavors of the flesh of the fruit explode in the mouth and its peel containing a very high level of essential oils make it a choice base for many recipes. For that matter, no one mistakes it, and certainly not the cooks and the Michelin-starred chefs who source their lemons exclusively at the Citronneraie Mazet.

So don’t resist a sun- and vitamin-filled getaway with a wander through this extraordinary garden, then continue indulgently, by discovering all the artisanal produce of the estate on the Citronneraie Mazet's website.
