Cezanne’s Studio in Aix-en-Provence

It’s in the heights of his native town, Aix-en-Provence, that the famous French painter set up his studio. More than a century later, the place where Cezanne left his mark has become a highpoint for both tourists and locals.

When Paul Cezanne decided in 1901 to establish his studio on the Chemin des Lauves, overlooking Aix-en-Provence, it’s because he wanted to lose himself in the heart of untamed wilderness, the same that inspired him for his paintings. It was in this little refuge, once lost in the Provençale scrubland, that he would notably complete one of his most important masterpieces, “The Bathers” (“Les Grandes Baigneuses”).

Deceased in 1906, Cezanne only made use of this studio, located in the heights of his native town, for 5 years. Yet, more than a century after he left it, everywhere his trace survives. In this table, this chest of drawers, this stepladder or easel that belonged to him, the painter lives on. It’s enough for that matter to close your eyes to imagine him here or there moving the objects that made up the models for his still lives, the earthenware pots, vases, or fruit…

Today open to visitors, Paul Cezanne’s studio remained empty for many years before the city of Aix-en-Provence decided to buy it in 1969. This place, now extremely popular with tourists, is also enjoyed by locals. And what greater honor than to have renamed his street the Avenue Paul Cezanne?
