Guinea Fowl from Lussan

A few miles from Uzès, the village of Lussan has quite an original specialty – one that has become a ubiquitous decorative object in Provence and around the world.
By Caroline Taret

It’s difficult not to fall under the charm of Provence handcrafts… tablecloths, pottery, and baskets, as soon as we put them down at home these souvenirs seem to emanate the song of a cicada or the whiff of a pine grove… The guinea fowl and other Lussan chickens and quail are undeniably part of this category: these ceramic poultry with their generous stylized lines are made of clay and hand glazed: their graphic, spotted grey-white plumage contrasts with their little faces and piercing black eyes. A family tradition initiated by Heidi Caillard has endured for 40 years, and has made the adorable guinea fowl a classic of its kind, who pecking around New York lofts and Parisian apartments. Could the guinea fowl dethrone the cicada ?
