Van Gogh's Drawings On Show in Arles

One year after its inauguration, the Van Gogh Foundation in Arles is readying to present almost fifty drawings by the Dutch painter. It’s a fabulous homage to a little-known facet of this visionary artist, better known for his brushstrokes than his drawing skills.
By Mélissa Darré

In spite of everything I shall rise again: I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing." In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent Van Gogh evokes this passion that drove him from an early age. This autodidact dedicated himself to drawing throughout his career, considering the mastery of this medium as the best way to become a painter.

The foundation in Arles has chosen to expose this phenomenal output of over one thousand drawings and prints via a selection of 47 original works. The wide selection spotlights the evolution of a style – covering everything from quick sketches to creative drawing and influenced by Japanese art – developed by the painter during his Provencal saga in Arles.

So after examining the evolution of color in Van Gogh’s palette during a first exhibition, the Foundation now presents a wonderful focus on the influence of drawing on the Dutch painter, and more globally on the impact of his work on contemporary art. This engaging dialogue between past and present is to discover via the sketches of a unique genius.
